Naturopathic Medicine combines the art and science of disease prevention using
natural therapies and gentle hands on techniques, rather than prescription drugs
and surgery.  Naturopathic Medicine is guided by six underlying principles:

  • First do no harm (primum non nocere)
  • Support the healing power of the body (vis medicatrix naturae)
  • Identify and treat the causes (tolle causum)
  • Treat the whole person (tolle totum)
  • Emphasize prevention (prevenio)
  • Doctor as teacher (docere)

Naturopathic Medicine views each person as an integral whole.  Symptoms of
disease are indicators of improper functioning of one or more systems in the
body.  The underlying goal is to identify and treat the
cause of an illness and to
prevent further complications.

What is a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine?

A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) has completed post graduate degree at an accredited
four-year naturopathic medicine program.  A Naturopathic Doctor recommends
natural alternatives and educates an individual on personal health care, offering a
complete and coordinated approach to individual well being.

Naturopathic Doctors (ND's) are general practitioners trained as specialists in
natural medicine and preventative health care.  ND's recognize the
healing
powers of the body
and nature and attempt to restore the normal functioning of
the body through the use of natural remedies and therapies.  These remedies and
therapies  enhance the body's own healing abilities.

Naturopathic Doctors must pass a national board exam (NPLEX) in order to
practice in states that have licensed naturopathic medicine. The states that
currently license naturopathic doctors are: Alaska, Arizona, California,
Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire,
Oregon, Utah, Vermont, and Washington.  Please note that New York is not a
licensed state.

Most highly qualified and credible naturopathic doctors hold a license in one of
the aforementioned states even though they may be consulting elsewhere. The
American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) supports legislation to
license NDs in all states in order to make the distinction between properly
trained physicians from those who call themselves NDs without the naturopathic
medical school training.
The New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians is
currently seeking licensure of Naturopathic Doctors in the state of New York.  To
